Darren Aronofsky was born February 12, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up, Darren was always artistic: he loved classic movies and, as a teenager, he even spent time doing graffiti art. After high school, Darren went to Harvard University to study film (both live-action and animation). He won several film awards after completing his senior thesis film, “Supermarket Sweep”, starring Sean Gullette, which went on to becoming a National Student Academy Award finalist. Aronofsky didn’t make a feature film until five years later, in February 1996, where he began creating the concept for Pi (1998). After Darren’s script for Pi (1998) received great reactions from friends, he began production. The film re-teamed Aronofsky with Gullette, who played the lead. This went on to further successes, such as Requiem for a Dream (2000) and, most recently, the American remake of the Japanese film series “Kozure okami” (1973) (aka “Lone Wolf & Cub”).
first solo exhibition of Peter Eramian

May 31st – June 21st 2012
Private view: May 30th 2012, 20:00

Omikron Gallery is delighted to announce Peter Eramian’s first solo exhibition “The Laughter”. The exhibition will be on show from 31 May until 21 June 2012.

The exhibition is centred on a recreation and tribute to the satirical newspaper Laughter (Γέλιο) that was published in Cyprus by George A. Fasouliotis during the period 1928 -1938, a rough and troubled historical moment for the island during its time under British colonial rule. The newspaper was an inspiration for Peter Eramian, as he is both an artist and publisher, who believes that the current times also demand such brave and fearless critique.

Eramian’s edition consists of six satirical articles that pose hypothetical but serious questions.

What would happen “if Mother died”?
What is the truth behind the tragic events at Mari?
How could we possible solve the problem of corruption in Cyprus?
Who is the real Queen Elisabeth II?
What is the Nicosia airport destined to be?
Why would a church be built on the moon?…

The artist wonders through texts, videos, photographs and digital collages whether today’s art could be expressed as a purely socio-political action.

Peter Eramian was born in 1984 in Nicosia (Cyprus). He lives and works between London and Nicosia. In 2007 he graduated from Goldsmiths College with a degree in Fine Art and History of Art after which he completed his postgraduate degree in Philosophy at Birkbeck. He is co-founding editor and publisher of Shoppinghour magazine in London and The Cyprus Dossier in Cyprus. In 2010 he worked at Fabrica (Italy) for 6 months. He has participated in group exhibitions and festivals in New York, San Fransisco, London, Liverpool, Vancouver, Geneva, Toijala.

Opening Hours
Monday - Fridays:
10:00 - 13:00 and 16:00 - 20:00
Saturday: 10:00 - 14:00

A piece of paper is divided by hand into an even number of pieces and then reassembled.
A photograph of this finished composition is then printed and divided again.
This makes the impossible possible, tearing the now included empty spaces that make up the tears in the paper. This feedback division process is repeated while the number of imprecise manual divisions gradually increase. Everything is created by division

…was born in Wattenscheid, Germany in 1939.
From 1974 to 2005 he was teaching at the School of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.

RInke’s work includes drawing, photography, sculpture and performance which each experiment corresponds to a specific period of his life of discoveries.. (Greece, Japan, Australia, US…)

The work of Klaus Rinke addresses and contends with the ideas that concern us all: they emphasize the ties maintained between the individual and the outside world — time, space, and man’s place in the Universe..

May 11 and Salvador would celebrate his 108th birthday!

“Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech was born at 8:45 on the morning of May 11, 1904 in the small agricultural town of Figueres, Spain. Figueres is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, only sixteen miles from the French border in the principality of Catalonia. The son of a prosperous notary, Dali spent his boyhood in Figueres and at the family’s summer home in the coastal fishing village of Cadaques where his parents built his first studio. As an adult, he made his home with his wife Gala in nearby Port Lligat. Many of his paintings reflect his love of this area of Spain.

The young Dali attended the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. Early recognition of Dali’s talent came with his first one-man show in Barcelona in 1925. He became internationally known when three of his paintings, including The Basket of Bread(now in the Museum’s collection), were shown in the third annual Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1928 . . .more”

Naturwissenschaft und Medizin designed by German graphic designer and typographer Erwin Poell during the 60s-70s. Subtly appealing and well thought out, these make science look good.

“I share these as one of the best examples of graphic design as a methodic communications system I am aware of. Engaging and varied, as singles or as a set work tremendously well. The inside of the magazine may be considered disappointing if you want more of the same as the cover - but actually is delightful simple. The cover does its job really well selling the contents while the contents is true unto itself.”
-
the first cover reminds me of something… hm…
the following conversation had occur in our fan page on facebook when we asked if anyone knew if there was an association with Nicosia (Cyprus) map…

… is the first of a series, collage novel by Max Ernst published in 1929.

It was a kind of comic strip, but not a real comic book, selecting fragments of wood engravings from nineteenth-century magazines, encyclopaedias and trivial novels. Some collages parody famous works of art. The newly forged combinations of scientific instruments and floating figures and of landscapes with unexpected interiors guarantee the odd dream world identified so closely with Surrealism.

“Nothing explains the film better than the film itself. Nonetheless, here is a concise and vaguely pretentious synopsis:

The film charts the development of a young man as he navigates his way through an impressionistic landscape in search of an elusive monster which is intent on destroying his childhood home. Lost and confused for the most part, he nonetheless uncovers the beast; a creature whose origins are both terrifying and liberating.”
-Villagers
